An Evening of Storytelling and Lacrosse with Nekwimetstn (Sam Seward)

Posted on

According to the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace, “sport has a unique power to attract, mobilize and inspire. By its very nature, sport is about participation. It is about inclusion and citizenship.”

This evening of storytelling, hosted in partnership by NSIIP and North Vancouver Recreation & Culture (NVRC), created a 2-part interactive dialogue and workshop series. Led by Nekwimetstn (Sam Seward) from the Squamish Nation, event participants had the unique opportunity to learn about a sport of significance to Indigenous culture. With 62 years experience playing lacrosse, Elder Nekwimetstn has been a competitive player, coach, scout and manager in the sport.

Over 40 community members from diverse backgrounds came together to learn about lacrosse, its history and the connection to Indigenous culture. This immersive learning experience offered participants an opportunity to explore the relationship between sport, culture and experiences of belonging while learning fundamental lacrosse skills ending in an exciting community game of lacrosse!
