In a world where racism still persists, the North Shore Immigrant Inclusion Partnership (NSIIP), amplified the work of the North Shore Anti-Racism Network, with the #STEPUpNorthShore Racism Response campaign. The campaign’s website serves as a hub of resources and information, providing community members with the tools they need to address racism in their daily lives. This multilingual, multimedia campaign, including videos, public education initiatives, and community engagements, has not only raised awareness but also empowered individuals to safely intervene during incidents of racism, fostering a more inclusive and united community.
The #STEPUpNorthShore campaign was launched with the clear goal of connecting the community to Step Up together. Powered by the North Shore Racism Response Protocol and through the various campaign components, the message has successfully reached a wide audience, sparking conversations and inspiring action. This campaign is built around the four key sections of the Protocol: Safety & Prevention, Taking Charge, Event Documentation & Reporting, and Providing Care to provide information, education, and tools to appropriately respond to, report on, and support victims of a range of race and hate-based incidents.
One of the key strengths of the #STEPUpNorthShore campaign is its multilingual, inclusive approach. By providing information in multiple languages, the campaign has ensured that it is accessible to a diverse range of community members, including newcomers and non-English speakers. This inclusivity has been essential in creating a sense of belonging and unity within the community, further demonstrating the commitment of the organization to building a more connected North Shore.
The campaign’s video component has been particularly impactful, showcasing a collective message of community call to take a step towards action (Check out the video here). This video serves as a powerful call to everyone in the community to #STEPUP, informing on the importance of standing up against racism and the impact that individual actions can have on creating a more inclusive society.
Public education has also been a key focus of the campaign, through sharing real-world examples designed to educate the community about acts of racism and how to respond to them. These initiatives have not only increased awareness but have also equipped community members with the knowledge and skills to safely take action when they encounter racism. By empowering individuals with the know-how, skills, and resources to respond, we hope to see a collective uplift in showing up for each other within the community and supporting others through incidents of racism.
As the #STEPUpNorthShore campaign continues to gain momentum, there is a clear commitment to building on its success. Plans are already underway for future initiatives and events that will further promote community inclusion and address racism. Community members are encouraged to stay tuned and continue their support for the campaign as it strives to create a more inclusive and united North Shore community.
Together, we can all #STEPUP, take a stand against racism, and make a difference in our community.
