We are honoured to work with local Indigenous elders and leaders to deliver the Land We Live On program, a series of activities and educational workshops exploring the history of Indigenous people and what this means for newcomers to Canada.
The Land We Live On is designed to provide newcomers with an opportunity to participate in activities and educational workshops exploring the history of Indigenous people, Truth and Reconciliation and what this means for newcomers to Canada. We worked with local Indigenous leaders, elders, and organizations to deliver content focused on knowledge sharing and building understanding. During this first series, we explored land acknowledgements, the importance of the connection to the land, the history of the Squamish Nation and featured guest speakers from the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre sharing key learnings on hunting and gathering, regalia as well as stories of ancient traditions and current lifestyles of the Squamish & Lil’wat peoples.
Many immigrants have experienced similar impacts of colonialism in their home countries and knowing our own history with colonialism is required to build an informed life in Canada. Through the Land We Live On program, we are looking forward to another year of building relationships across newcomer and Indigenous communities.
