Building Confidence, Building Careers: The Importance of Workplace English for Professional Im/migrants

Posted on

For many newcomers and im/migrants on the North Shore, finding employment that matches their education, skills, and experience is one of the biggest challenges of settling in a new community. While many arrive with strong professional backgrounds, English language barriers can make it difficult to access opportunities in their field. At Impact North Shore, we see every day how workplace-focused English language learning can help bridge that gap.

According to the 2021 Census, 75% of im/migrants aged 15 and older on the North Shore have post-secondary education, and more than half hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher. Many also bring extensive professional experience in management, technical, and professional occupations. Despite these qualifications, our 2025 client survey found that most employed respondents are not currently working in roles aligned with their education, experience, or career goals.

Language remains one of the most significant barriers experienced by im/migrants when searching for work that matches their background. To respond to this need, Impact North Shore offers a range of English language learning opportunities, including specialized workplace English programs. These sessions focus on practical communication skills that help participants navigate Canadian workplaces with more confidence. Participants practice workplace conversations, expand their vocabulary for professional settings, and strengthen communication skills needed for interviews, meetings, teamwork, and day-to-day interactions.

The demand for these services continues to grow. Between January and April 2026, 250 people registered for workplace-related language classes. These workplace English sessions now provide a critical opportunity for newcomers to continue developing advanced language skills that support long-term career success and community inclusion.

When professional im/migrants can fully use their skills and experience, the entire North Shore benefits. By investing in workplace English language learning, we are helping build a stronger, more inclusive, and more prosperous community for everyone.
