There’s a profound power in the stories we tell and the art we create. Witnessing the Reflections on Belonging exhibit was an enriching experience—hearing the voices of individuals sharing what it means to belong and how it feels when belonging is lost.
This visiting exhibit, developed by the Vernon and District Immigrant and Community Services Society, with support from the Government of Canada’s Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Program, offered an opportunity to challenge how we understand identity, community, and the dynamics of social change. Through storytelling, immersive art, and interactive experiences, participants were invited to think about what it means to feel a sense of belonging. This exhibit welcomed guests at the North Vancouver District Public Library and Impact North Shore office. In addition Impact North Shore also hosted a youth workshop and open house, further deepening engagement and connection with the themes of belonging.
An Invitation to Reflect
The Reflections on Belonging exhibit is more than art; it’s a call to action. Belonging is not just about fitting in; it’s about being welcomed, seen, and valued for who we are. It’s about creating spaces where joy can flourish, connections can deepen, and differences are celebrated. The exhibit challenged participants to ask themselves:
- Why is it important to cultivate a sense of joy in being together?
- What can we do to foster belonging in our communities, families, and workplaces?
- How does a sense of belonging – or the lack thereof – affect our daily lives?
Carrying the Vision Forward
As we share the work from Reflections on Belonging, we invite you to engage with its themes in your own life. Reflect on the ways you cultivate belonging and the impact it has on those around you. Together, we can build a world where belonging is not just a possibility but a reality for everyone.
