Impact North Shore Helps Ukrainian Newcomers Make the North Shore Home

Posted on

Impact North Shore provides a welcoming and safe space where Ukrainian newcomers receive support, to help them find their footing here in Canada.

“Impact North Shore helped my family with adaptation in Canada. I got many useful information and sources at their Info Sessions and Workshops. Thank you for such an organization and support for Ukrainian immigrants.” – Ukrainian Newcomer

Since April 29th we have supported 73 families which includes 243 individuals, through various programs and services. Here are some highlights:

  • Our Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) program has helped 110 clients with understanding and enrolling their children in the school system.
  • We’ve helped 103 Ukrainian newcomers improve their English skills with our Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) classes, which run 5 days a week.
  • The Employment Services team here at Impact North Shore including our WorkBC services have provided support and guidance to over 100 clients, to prepare them for joining the workforce and finding sustainable employment in Canada.
  • In the summer we hosted a 4 session Ukrainian Newcomer Women’s Support Group attended by 18 women.
  • We ran a two-part Information Session for Ukrainian Newcomers, in collaboration with the North Vancouver City Library that gave 20 Ukrainian newcomers insights on immigration pathways and permits, employment, and education here in Canada.
  • With the help of contributions from partners, we are able to provide Ukrainian refugees with the essentials, and opportunities to build connections in the community and enjoy the experiences that it has to offer.

Our continued building and sustainment of relationships with community partners has enabled recent Ukrainian newcomers to access free weekly groceries with nutritious and organic produce from North Shore Neighbourhood House in partnership with North Shore farm.

“I’m grateful for all your help to me and my son, from helping me understand and prepare documents, to supporting me with translation and helping me with adaptation here in Canada. I was quickly able to adapt to the new realities, navigate in a number of necessary questions, make new acquaintances and over the fear of communicating with different people in Canadian society.” – Ukrainian Newcomer

From assessing their needs and providing services and programs that can meet these needs, Impact North Shore helps set the foundation on which to build a new life here in Canada. We aim to give newcomers the tools they need to become independent and self-reliant.

“Many Ukrainian Newcomers who arrive in Canada with no friends and often no family”, says Khatereh from our SWIS Team. “In cases where we cannot fully support them with the resources and knowledge, we usually have partners who can. What we can always give them is a warm welcome”.

Impact North Shore is somewhere newcomers can come for genuine warmth and compassion when they find themselves in unfamiliar territory; support with documentation; access to information about the local community; and opportunities to make social connections.

At Impact North Shore, we strive to help newcomers establish a support network, and find the resources and services they need to address the challenges being faced.
