At Impact North Shore, we understand the profound importance of helping im/migrants integrate into our community through specialized support and services. Achieving this goal requires partnerships that leverage the strengths of multiple organizations to address specific needs. Impact North Shore collaborates with Silver Harbour Seniors’ Activity Centre to meet the needs of im/migrant seniors in our communities.
Addressing Unique Needs Through Collaboration
Silver Harbour and Impact North Shore have joined forces to create programs that meet the evolving needs of im/migrant seniors. This partnership focuses on bringing English as a Second Language (ESL) programs as well as digital literacy directly to im/migrant seniors on-site at Silver Harbour.
As Annwen Loverin, Executive Director of Silver Harbour, explains:
“We are so pleased to be starting out as a host partner in this collaboration. We want to showcase what’s possible when local organizations come together to promote our programs and uplift the people we serve together.”
– Annwen Loverin, Executive director, Silvery Harbour centre
These programs are carefully designed to cater to the learning styles and daily lives of older adults, emphasizing conversational language skills and practical social interactions. By centering the programs around real-life scenarios—such as chatting with neighbours or navigating public services—they ensure that seniors can fully participate in the community.
Programs Designed for Seniors
The Digital Literacy workshops for Farsi-speaking im/migrant seniors address a critical gap by equipping older adults with the skills needed to navigate an increasingly digital world, all in the language they are most comfortable speaking. Whether learning to use email, join a video call, or access online services, participants gain both confidence and practical tools for daily life that strengthen their sense of belonging.
The Seniors Learning Circles not only help seniors improve their English skills, but also create opportunities for meaningful social connections. Silver Harbour staff ensure that participants feel supported and connected, both inside and outside the classroom. With increased confidence as a result of the program, participants embrace community life by actively engaging in Silver Harbour Centre’s activities; from joining the local dancing group to forming friendships, these interactions enrich their experience and help break down barriers of isolation.
A Model for Collaboration
The success of these programs is rooted in the collaboration between Silver Harbour and Impact North Shore. Silver Harbour provides a welcoming space and on-the-ground support, while Impact North Shore brings expertise in im/migrant-focused programming and community outreach. By pooling resources, both organizations ensure that no one is left behind.
As Loverin puts it:
“This collaboration is a testament to what’s possible when organizations align their missions and resources. Together, we’re empowering im/migrant seniors to thrive in their new home.”
This partnership highlights how working together can amplify impact and address gaps in community support. Through working together to address the unique needs of im/migrant seniors, we are collectively improving individual lives and fostering inclusivity through community-driven solutions.
